Recently, on the ARG-UK facebook Group, there have been a lot of posts about newts still active in ponds through the mild weather. CARG secretary Erik, feeling a little inspired, took a trip to a pond in East Kilbride this evening (30/12/13) and by torchlight survey spotted a male palmate newt (Lissotriton helveticus) active in the pond.

This little guy musn't be the only one - newts may be active in ponds year round but as people hardly ever torch ponds in Winter, they may well go unseen. ANy additional records of adult newts active in ponds at this time of the year would be very welcome!
