On 2nd June, CARG members Eilidh Spence and John Sweeney, assisted by Iain McDonald, captured a sample of 30 Palmate Newts for Chytrid swabbing at a pond beside the cyclepath at Elderslie, Renfrewshire. The procedure is completely harmless and the newts were all returned to the pond afterwards. These swabs, tested by project worker Freya Smith, will help herpetoogists to track the spread of the Chytrid disease affecting amphibianns in some parts of the country. We don't have the results yet but these will be posted here whenver they do come in.
